Mostly all Solutions Architect roles are direct customer facing roles where in you get a chance to lead architecture reviews, office hours, design discussions etc. The Solutions Architect role requires you to be focused more on the Breadth of solutions out there rather than a particular service.Įxample - As a Software Engineer while working on a project, I got to get my hands dirty with every API of the AWS DyanmoDB service and had a detailed understanding of this service but a Solutions Architect I need to not only understand how AWS DyanmoDB works but also how it is different from other database offerings in AWS. 2) Focus is on Breadth and not Depth.Īs a Software Engineer, you generally get in-depth into building a technology stack, solution or a platform. While talking to the executives it is very important to have a strong Business Acumen to understand each stakeholder’s motivation and since the Solutions are Technical, that is where you Tech Acumen is necessary. As a Solutions Architect you get a chance to talk to company executives like the CEO, CTO, CIO.etc., where your role is be a Cloud/Solution Advocate. Solutions Architect role is combination of Sales and Technical role where the Sales Aspect is 30-40% and Technical aspect is 70-60%. Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind coming from a Software Engineer world - 1) Solutions Architect = Business Acumen + Technical Acumen. I have lots of Engineers reaching out to me every week wanting to know "What is the Solutions Architect role about and What do Solutions Architects do?" So, I decided to write this post to share my journey with everyone who might be potentially be interested in transitioning into the Solutions Architect role. After about 3 years of being a Software Engineer, my interests peaked towards designing and architecting workloads in AWS and I decided to transition my role into a Solutions Architect role. Prior to this role I was a Software Engineer for Amazon's Forecasting Team. Much of the practice exams I've been doing from Jon Bonso have been along those same lines.Let me start with a quick introduction - I am a Solutions Architect for AWS and have been in this role for almost 2 years. Or the minimum number of days objects have to be in an S3 standard bucket before I can lifecycle them to IA, or that the same number is lower for Glacier. Or how many IOPS I get per GB of block storage. Or to cram into my head the max number of reserved instances I can have. I do tend to get jaded when I'm asked to remember that 65,000 IOPS calls for one type of block storage over another. The Associate-level exam is very much reminiscent of the CompTIA exams, except that the trivia is at least relevant in exposing me to features of AWS I might find useful in applying DevOps and serverless concepts. The Solutions Architect exam at least according to Adrian Cantrill is very much the entry point to whatever level you want to be in (Associate or Professional) in that the other ones tend to build upon the knowledge of the Solutions Architect exam. I was referring to the Associate-level exam.
